-Theology

One third of the population in the world today are Christians. This means that Christianity is the numerically largest religion on earth. In Western Europe it has been dominant for more than 1,000 years. Today Christianity is growing in Asia and the southern hemisphere, while it becomes weaker in the West.

Within the field of Theology you study Christianity from different aspects, for example from philosophical, historical and social points of view. Theology gives you knowledge about the thoughts and development of Christianity as well as of the background and interpretations of the Bible.

Studies in Theology are essential for everyone who wishes to understand the Western culture and the world today. Currently CTR has one programme, the Theology Programme, which is given in Swedish. The programme is non-denominational, but it is an integral part of the education for future ministers in the Church of Sweden.

-Religious Studies

Religion is important within the fields of politics and international relations. At the same time it is a source of inspiration in art, literature and music. In addition, new developments in medical, technical and scientific research force us to reflect on entirely new questions concerning right and wrong, good and evil.

In Religious Studies you face questions that deal with the very existence of humankind. How do different worldviews affect us and the situation in the world? What are the arguments for and against the existence of God?

This is a subject designed for those who are interested in acquiring a broad knowledge of the different fields of religious studies. The courses are suitable for students who aim for careers as a researcher, teacher, as well as positions in for example cultural organisations and international aid organisations. In Religious Studies there are courses that introduce you to the perspectives and methods of behavioural sciences in connection to religious studies. You also get the opportunity to learn more about ethics and the philosophy of religion.

The core curriculum of Religious Studies also promotes international relations, equality and the acceptance and understanding of ethnic minorities. It allows you to improve your capacity for critical analysis of religious dogma and moral reflection. It also provides tools for the interpretation and understanding of the role of religions and personal life philosophies for individuals as well as for societies, historically and in modern times.

-Jewish Studies

Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world. But Judaism is not only a religion, but also a history, culture and identity. This combination makes Judaism a fascinating object of study.

Today there are 15 million Jews in the world, approximately 16,000 of whom live in Sweden. This means that Judaism is quite small, if you count numbers only. Jews have often been a persecuted minority. Despite this they have kept their identity and often influenced the culture of the majority.

When you take courses in Jewish Studies you get new perspectives on issues such as racism and identity. At the same time you learn more about a religion and a culture that has influenced the world we live in today.

-Islamology

CTR is responsible for the most comprehensive education in Sweden concerning Islam and Muslim life. Here you get the opportunity to study Islam in Europe and Sweden, the political roles of Islam, Muslim feminism, Shi’i Islam, everyday Islam and Sufism (Muslim mysticism). We also give courses about Islam in South and South East Asia and Islam’s relationship to art, architecture and media. Naturally our courses will also give you knowledge about the life of Muhammad, the origins of the Qur’an and the historical development of Islam.

-History of Religions

Knowledge of different religious traditions is important both for individuals and for the society. Religions have often influenced the political, cultural and economic development in different parts of the world. Studies in History of Religions will give you knowledge about Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity and other religions.

-Human Rights

Human Rights is a field of study that is connected to CTR, However, it explores Human Rights from the points of view of such diverse subjects as Ethics/Religious Studies, History, Law and Political Science.

-Research

Research and post-graduate education may be pursued in fourteen different fields. CTR has attracted several larger research projects that involve scholars and doctoral students from several disciplines for up to four years.

-----

"Students feel they receive a good academic education at the  CTR. They recognize a clear relationship to research in their studies. The teachers are able to provide a deeper focus on those areas in which they themselves do research. Students are encouraged to do research in areas they are interested in and they appreciate their teachers' expertise and ability to generate enthusiasm for academic studies."
